It appears Facebook has begun publicly testing advertisements based on status updates and wall posts published by users. This is something we’ve been expecting for over a year but now we’re finally beginning to see the first implementations of it live on the site.

Rather than posting the standard “Sponsored” title above advertisements on the right hand side of a user’s profile, Facebook is testing a version which states “Related adverts”. In the image below, Facebook appears to be using the words “sun” and “play” to generate related status updates and advertisements which appear to be musically related as a result of the word “Play”.

While we’re not quite sure how this works, but it’s clear that the content it supposed to be related. Over the past couple years we’ve discussed how targeted advertising based on status update content makes a lot of sense. If Facebook can surface advertisements about information related to the thoughts a user is having at any given point, there’s an increased likelihood that the user will respond to those ads. It will be interested to see if these improve ads as Facebook expands their testing.

Thanks to Paul Miller for the tip!

That URL leads to a Facebook page running an application called Congood. Clicking “allow” on the permission box leads to a page that flashes a picture of a woman’s back side for less than a second before popping up a menu of three different affiliate schemes.

Clicking on any of the three choices exposes you to malware and leads you down a path that earns the scammer a commission if you go through the whole exercise. Instead of wasting time playing the game, filling out a marketing survey or trying out customized profile layouts, close the window and go clean up your Facebook page — get rid of the application installed in your account, and delete any references to it in your news feed.

And the next time you feel tempted to check out a link you’re unsure about, try running it through the AVG scanner first, like our friends at Facecrooks suggest.

Some administrators don’t have the ability to suggest their pages to friends; we wonder whether the “haves” and “have-nots” are a test group and a control group for Facebook to study whether to permanently reinstate the feature for all admins.

The feature now has a different look than the previous version of suggest to friends. The new one incorporates the same icon that shows pending friend requests, next to the notifications icon in the blue bar at the top of the screen. That same image also appears beneath the main profile photo, linking to the person’s friend list.

When Facebook took away administrators’ ability to suggest pages to friends in November, the same feature also disappeared for visitors to the page — and the latter hasn’t returned at all with the selective reinstatement of page suggestions.

If in fact the selective reinstatement of page suggestions is a test, and Facebook decides to fully reinstate the feature based on the results, it’s possible that page visitors might see a return of the suggestion option as well.

Readers, are you able to suggest friends for the pages you administer?

Props to Robert Lani for the tip.

Parent company Research In Motion says that about 21 million people actively use Facebook on the BlackBerry every day, while monthly average users tops 30 million.

However, not all of them use the latest version of the operating system, but the newest version of Facebook will become available for devices with 4.6 or higher OS in future releases — typical of RIM’s strategy to encourage people to upgrade.

Since I have one of those lesser versions of the BlackBerry, I have to take RIM’s word for it that Facebook 2.0 includes:

“Always on” Facebook chat notifications

a Redesigned navigation grid

a new notification bar

improved news feed scrolling

enhanced profiles

added publisher functionality

an updated user interface

Further descriptions of the enhancements appear on the official BlackBerry blog. To download the new Facebook 2.0 onto your RIM device, click here.

Readers, have you had a chance to try Facebook 2.0 for the BlackBerry, and if so what do you think about the enhanced features?
